ADHD Busy, or Making Progress?

Daily life gives us so many opportunities to stay busy! So many demands that we can meet, and check off the list!

And I used to feel good about my ability to get things done - even my ability to persevere through the overwhelm - until one day when I realized that all these good activities and accomplishments weren’t getting me any closer to where I wanted to be.

I was busy, but not making progress. I call it, ADHD busy.

I could go my whole life simply staying busy and doing things that need to be done. It wasn’t until I realized I would never be recognized for that, or more specifically, that I didn’t WANT to be recognized for that, that it started becoming clear.

One of the hardest lessons of my ADHD experience is that just because we recognize needs, just because we are able to respond, doesn’t mean we should.

And from that realization, I found this question, “What would you like to be recognized for?” very clarifying.

It’s a question that I use a lot now, as a strategy for big decisions and small: “Is this taking me closer or further toward who I want to be?”
