Re-Name to Re-Frame the Task
Language is funny. We commonly use generic terms for complex activities that make it sound like a thing you do, rather than an objective you complete. We make it sound simple, verbally, while knowing it is complex. This internal contradiction sort of explodes in our minds and makes the task seem bigger and harder than it really is!
“Clean your room.” [What does that even mean?]
“Do the taxes". [Scream!]
Here’s a suggestion to “try differently”:
What if, rather than calling it [“the dreaded name”], you used specific words that describe the action step you will do?
“I will put the dirty clothing in the hamper, my shoes in the closet, the Legos in their bin, take all food wrappers to the trash bin, and vacuum the floor.” Sure, I can do that; 20 minutes, max.
“I will use 20 minutes online looking up and saving documents today.” No problem!
What are you putting off? Consider how you are thinking of it.
Re-name it in action steps, and sure, put a time frame on it — and see if your energy and motivation shift.
